Two Sessions. One Bigger Idea.

Automating the Work Behind the Design

Presented by Eng. Hussein Ragab

The first session explored how automation can simplify repetitive MEP design tasks and reduce the time engineers spend on manual calculations and data handling.

Practical examples included HAP data extraction, equipment schedules, condensate drainage, staircase pressurization, and corridor smoke management.

The focus was not simply on using software faster, but on understanding where automation can remove repetitive work and give engineers more time for actual engineering decisions.

Emergency Power: Designing for What Matters

Presented by Eng. Mohan Daniel

The second session shifted to emergency power supply for buildings.

The discussion covered generator sizing, load assessment, reliability, coordination, client requirements, and cost-effective design.

The key message was simple: emergency power design is not just about selecting a generator with enough capacity. It is about understanding what the building needs when normal power is unavailable.

What Made the Session Practical?

The workshop connected everyday design challenges with practical engineering solutions.

From automating HAP outputs to improving equipment schedules, from considering actual weather data in condensate calculations to understanding generator loads, the sessions focused on decisions engineers can apply directly to their projects.

Key Takeaways

Automation can:

  • Reduce repetitive design work
  • Speed up data extraction and schedules
  • Minimise manual errors and rework
  • Give engineers more time for engineering judgement

Emergency power design requires:

  • Accurate load assessment
  • Appropriate generator sizing
  • Reliable system coordination
  • Understanding of client requirements
  • Cost-effective engineering decisions

The Bigger Shift

The future of MEP engineering is not about replacing engineering judgement with automation.

It is about using better tools to remove repetitive work — and using the time saved to think better, coordinate better, and design better.

This workshop brought both sides together: smarter tools and stronger engineering thinking.

That is where modern MEP design is heading.
